Slab & Cylinder Concrete Volume Calculations and Pre-mix Bag Yields
Whether ordering concrete trucks or mixing dry bags on site, calculating the precise cubic volume is necessary to avoid job delays or excess material waste. This guide breaks down geometric concrete formulas and bag yields.
1. Structural Concrete Volume Formulas
Concrete volumes are determined by the geometric shape of the casting forms. Standard applications include rectangular slabs and cylindrical columns/piers:
- Rectangular Slabs: Volume is computed as Length × Width × Thickness. In the US, coordinates are in feet and thickness is converted from inches (inches ÷ 12).
- Cylindrical Columns: Volume is computed using cylinder geometry: Volume = π × Radius² × Height.
- Cubic Yards Conversion (US): Concrete ordering is priced by the cubic yard. Since 1 cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet, convert by dividing cubic feet by 27: Volume (yd³) = Volume (ft³) ÷ 27.
- Cubic Meters (Metric): In GCC metric-based projects, length dimensions in meters yield cubic meters (m³) directly: Volume (m³) = Length (m) × Width (m) × Thickness (m).
2. Pre-mix Dry Concrete Bag Yields
For smaller jobs, contractors mix concrete on-site using pre-packaged dry bags. Standard bag weights yield standard volumetric outputs:
- 80 lb bag: Yields approximately 0.60 cubic feet (0.022 cubic yards). It takes 45 bags of 80 lb to mix 1 cubic yard.
- 60 lb bag: Yields approximately 0.45 cubic feet (0.017 cubic yards). It takes 60 bags of 60 lb to mix 1 cubic yard.
- 25 kg bag: Yields approximately 12.5 Litres (0.0125 cubic meters). It takes 80 bags of 25 kg to mix 1 cubic meter.
- 40 kg bag: Yields approximately 20.0 Litres (0.020 cubic meters). It takes 50 bags of 40 kg to mix 1 cubic meter.
3. Worked Examples
Worked Example (US Imperial): Driveway Slab
Estimate the concrete needed for a driveway slab measuring 30 ft long, 10 ft wide, and 4 inches thick:
Thickness in feet: 4 in ÷ 12 = 0.333 ft.
Volume in cubic feet: 30 × 10 × 0.333 = 100 cu ft.
Volume in cubic yards: 100 ÷ 27 = 3.70 cu yd.
Worked Example (Metric / GCC): Foundation Footing
A villa column footing measures 1.5 m long, 1.5 m wide, and 0.4 m thick. We will mix 40 kg dry bags:
Volume (m³) = 1.5 × 1.5 × 0.4 = 0.90 m³
Each 40 kg bag yields 0.020 m³.
Total Bags Needed = 0.90 ÷ 0.020 = 45 bags of 40 kg
