Consider a 100-foot commercial water supply line constructed from 2-inch Schedule 40 carbon steel pipe (OD = 2.375 in, Wall = 0.154 in):
- Step 1 (Internal Diameter): ID = 2.375″ − (2 × 0.154″) = 2.067 inches.
- Step 2 (Empty Pipe Weight): Weight = 10.6802 × 0.154 × (2.375 − 0.154) = 3.65 lb/ft. (365.0 lb for 100 ft).
- Step 3 (Fluid Volume Capacity): Capacity = 2.067² × 0.0408 = 0.174 gal/ft (17.4 gallons total).
- Step 4 (Water Weight): Water weight = 0.174 gal/ft × 8.34 lb/gal = 1.45 lb/ft (145.0 lb total).
- Step 5 (Total Wet Deadload): Total filled weight = 3.65 + 1.45 = 5.10 lb/ft (510.0 lb total for hanger sizing).
