Conduit Fill Results
Worked Example: #12 AWG THHN in 1/2-Inch EMT Conduit
Consider installing 12 AWG THHN copper conductors in 1/2-inch EMT conduit:
- Step 1 (Conduit Total Area): 1/2-inch EMT total internal area = 0.304 sq in (NEC Ch. 9 Table 4).
- Step 2 (Allowable 40% Area): Allowable 40% area = 0.304 × 0.40 = 0.1216 sq in (NEC Ch. 9 Table 1).
- Step 3 (Single Wire Area): #12 AWG THHN conductor area = 0.0133 sq in (NEC Ch. 9 Table 5).
- Step 4 (Max Wires): 0.1216 / 0.0133 = 9.14 conductors. Under Note 7 (fraction < 0.8), round down to 9 conductors (matches NEC Annex C Table C.1).
- Step 5 (3 Wires Fill %): For 3 conductors, fill % = (3 × 0.0133) / 0.304 = 13.12% (well within 40% limit).
