NEC Motor FLA Calculator (Tables 430.248 & 430.250)
Lookup full-load currents (FLC) for 1-phase and 3-phase electric motors per NEC Tables 430.248 and 430.250. Sizes 125% branch conductors (430.22) and maximum overcurrent protection (430.52).
Based on NEC 2023 (same as 2020 & 2017 Article 430). Estimates for planning only — electrical installations must comply with local code editions and be performed/verified by a licensed electrician. Not a substitute for engineered design or an AHJ ruling.
Motor Circuit Sizing Results
Worked Example: 5 HP 3-Phase 230V Motor Circuit Sizing
Consider sizing the branch circuit for a 5 HP 3-phase 230V squirrel-cage induction motor:
- Step 1 (Table FLC Lookup): Per NEC 430.6(A)(1), look up 5 HP at 230V in Table 430.250 $\rightarrow$ 15.2 Amperes FLC (do NOT use nameplate FLA).
- Step 2 (Branch Conductors): Per NEC 430.22, min conductor ampacity = 15.2 A × 1.25 = 19.0 A. Selected copper wire = 14 AWG Cu (rated 20 A at 75°C).
- Step 3 (Short-Circuit Protection): Per NEC 430.52(C)(1), max inverse-time breaker rating = 15.2 A × 2.50 = 38.0 A.
- Step 4 (Next Standard Size): Under Exception 1, 38.0 A rounds up to the next standard rating in NEC 240.6(A) $\rightarrow$ 40 Ampere Breaker.
