Worked Examples: 3-Phase Power & Transformer Sizing
Review two fundamental electrical engineering calculations:
- Example 1 (3-Phase 480V Feeder): For a 480V 3-phase system drawing 100 Amperes at 0.85 power factor:
• $S = \frac{\sqrt{3} \times 480 \text{ V} \times 100 \text{ A}}{1000} = \frac{1.73205 \times 48000}{1000} = \mathbf{83.14 \text{ kVA}}$.
• $P = 83.14 \text{ kVA} \times 0.85 = \mathbf{70.67 \text{ kW}}$. - Example 2 (75 kVA Transformer 208V Secondary): For a 75 kVA 3-phase step-down transformer with a 208V secondary:
• $I_{\text{sec}} = \frac{75,000 \text{ VA}}{\sqrt{3} \times 208 \text{ V}} = \frac{75,000}{360.25} = \mathbf{208.18 \text{ Amperes secondary FLA}}$.
