Worked Example: 40 ft DWV Drain Pipe Run
Calculate the required elevation drop for a 40-foot building drain installed at standard 1/4 in/ft code minimum slope:
- Step 1 (Fall in Inches): Fall = 40 ft × 0.25 in/ft = 10.0 inches total drop.
- Step 2 (Fall in Feet): Fall = 10.0 in / 12 = 0.833 feet.
- Step 3 (Percent Grade): Grade = (10.0 in / 480 in) × 100 = 2.083%.
- Step 4 (Angle): Angle = atan(10.0 / 480) = 1.193°.
