Data Sources & Engineering Standards

Every buildercalc calculator implements a published, citable engineering formula or industry standard — not a proprietary black box. This page lists the authorities our tools are built on so you can verify any result against its source.

Formulas & standards last reviewed: July 2026.

Structural, Concrete & Masonry

  • ACI 318 — Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete (American Concrete Institute). Powers the concrete volume, slab, footing, rebar and mix-design tools. concrete.org
  • ASTM A615 / A615M — Standard Specification for Deformed and Plain Carbon-Steel Bars. Powers the rebar size, weight and lap-length tools. astm.org

Roofing, Framing & Building Code

  • IRC / IBC — International Residential and Building Code rafter, stair and span provisions. Powers the roof-pitch, rafter, stair-stringer and headroom tools.
  • AWC span data (NDS) — American Wood Council allowable-span references. Powers the joist-span and framing tools. awc.org

Electrical, HVAC & Solar

  • NEC (NFPA 70) Article 310 — National Electrical Code conductor ampacity tables. Powers the wire-ampacity and voltage-drop tools.
  • ASHRAE Manual J principles — HVAC cooling/heating load fundamentals. Powers the HVAC BTU tool.

Logistics & Material Pricing

  • NMFTA density classes — the public LTL freight density-to-class breakpoints. Powers the freight-class tools. We use the public density method and do not reproduce the proprietary NMFC catalog.
  • U.S. BLS Producer Price Index (PPI) — official material price series (e.g. WPU101704 hot-rolled steel bars, WPU0811 softwood lumber). Powers the material price-trend reports. bls.gov/ppi

Unit Conversions

  • NIST / ASTM SI conversion factors — exact published factors (e.g. 1 yd³ = 0.764555 m³, 1 lb = 0.453592 kg). Powers the unit converter and every dual-unit (Imperial ↔ Metric) toggle.
