Glossary: Asphalt Density
The bulk density of compacted hot-mix asphalt paving, typically measured at 145 lb/ft³ (2320 kg/m³), used to convert pavement area into tonnage requirements.
Paving Material Volume to Mass Conversion
Asphalt paving materials are calculated by bulk density to determine trucking deliveries. Compacted hot-mix asphalt (HMA) density is highly critical because insufficient compaction leads to premature road failure:
- Density Benchmarks: Compacted asphalt requires 145 lb/ft³ (2.32 tons/yd³ or 2320 kg/m³). Uncompacted loose asphalt has a lower density (approximately 110–120 lb/ft³) prior to rolling.
- Subbase Aggregates: Gravel bases below asphalt typically require 105 lb/ft³ (1680 kg/m³) compacted density to support the pavement structure.
