A lookout is a horizontal 2x4 framing member nailed from the rafter tail plumb cut back to a wall ledger stud, creating a flat soffit box frame.
An open eave exposes sloped rafter tails underneath. A level boxed soffit encloses rafter tails with horizontal lookout framing and vertical drop boards.
