Glossary: Riser Height
**Riser Height** is the vertical distance from the top of one stair tread to the top of the next tread, strictly limited to a maximum of 7.75 inches under international residential codes.
Stair riser Sizing Codes
Riser heights must be uniform across a stair flight. Tripping hazards occur when risers deviate by more than 3/8 inches (9.5 mm) between steps. Builders cut stringer steps to match calculated risers.
