Glossary: Joint Compound

**Joint Compound** (also known as drywall mud) is a gypsum-based paste used to seal seams between drywall boards, cover fasteners, and create a smooth, continuous surface for priming and painting.

Drywall Finishing Application

Joint compound is typically applied in multiple coats over drywall tape (either paper or mesh). Standard ready-mix formulas shrink slightly as they dry, requiring subsequent thin skim coats to achieve a flat Level 4 or Level 5 finish.
