**ASTM A615** is the active standard specification governed by ASTM International (American Society for Testing and Materials) that defines chemical, physical, and tensile requirements for deformed and plain carbon-steel reinforcing bars used in concrete reinforcement applications.

Material Requirements & Chemical Limits

ASTM A615 is the most widely specified rebar standard in the United States and Canada. It outlines standard nominal sizes (#3 to #18) and prescribes deformed rib heights to maximize mechanical bonding to surrounding concrete matrix.

  • Material Composition: Billet steel with strict control of phosphorus content (maximum 0.06% to prevent embrittlement).
  • Weldability Limits: ASTM A615 rebar is carbon-steel and has no carbon-equivalent constraints. Splicing via welding is not recommended by structural codes without preheating; instead, ASTM A706 reinforcing bars are preferred for structural weld runs.
